2001 Highlights:
Had career highs in every offensive category except batting average and triples... Batted .283 with 12 home runs and 57 RBI in 124 games... Started games at four different positions for the A's, including 55 at designated hitter, 31 in right field, nine in left field and eight at first base... Batted .278 (55 for 198) with six home runs and 33 RBI at designated hitter... Ranked tied for fifth in average among American League designated hitters with more than 150 or more at bats... Was 4 for 16 (.250) as a pinch hitter but had six RBI which tied for second among A.L. pinch hitters (Fernandez, TOR 10)... Started games at every spot in the order except first and fourth... His most starts came in the number two spot where he batted .242 (31 for 128)... Hit .305 (74 for 243) in all other spots of the order, including .366 (26 for 71) when batting third... Batted .341 (15 for 44) with runners in scoring position and two outs but was just 2 for 17 (.118) with the bases loaded... Hit .320 (78 for 244) with nine of his 12 home runs at night compared to .213 (27 for 127) during the day... Now has a .296 (188 for 636) career batting average under the lights compared to .229 (78 for 341) in day games... Began the season sharing time with Adam Piatt in right field as he started 11 of the A's first 26 games in right before Piatt was optioned on May 2... Hit just .188 (9 for 48) in 20 games over that stretch but batted .297 (96 for 323) the from May 2 until the end of the season... Then hit .308 with a double and two RBI in five ALDS games against New York, including four starts at designated hitter... Went 13 for 31 (.419) over his first 10 games following Piatt's option but strained his left hamstring during that stretch on May 9... Played three more games before going on the disabled list on May 16... Hit .333 (9 for 27) in nine games with Triple-A Sacramento on a rehab assignment and was activated from the disabled list on June 9... Went 11 for 47 (.234) in his first 16 games following his return... Homered in the same game as his brother Jason on June 21 against Seattle and later duplicated that feat on August 11 against the New York... The Giambi brothers have now homered in the same game four times, joining Vladimir and Wilton Guerrero as the only brother combos to homer in the same game four times... Had three hits on June 27 at Seattle to start a 20-game stretch where he batted .429 (33 for 77) with 19 RBI and seven games of three or more hits... That lifted his average to a season high .325 on July 20... Included in that stretch was a career high tying four-hit performance on July 18 at Minnesota in which he doubled twice and drove in a career high six runs... Had just four home runs and 19 RBI in 57 games at the All-Star Break but hit eight home runs and had 38 RBI in 67 games after the break... Hit safely in each of his first 10 games after the All-Star Break (19 for 42, .452) which was the longest hitting streak of his career... Followed the hitting streak with a 0 for 16 streak... Had his average at the .304 mark following the game of August 4 but that would be his final day over .300 for the season... Hit .240 (29 for 121) over his final 44 games to finish the year at .283... Hit his first career pinch hit home run on August 19 at Chicago after going 1 for 9 with a walk and a sacrifice over his first 11 pinch hitting appearances... The home run came in the sixth inning with the A's trailing 6-5 in a game they would go on to win 8-7... Broke a 1-1 tie with a seventh inning pinch hit RBI single on September 2 at Tampa Bay in a 3-1 A's win... Then had a bases loaded pinch hit three-run double on September 25 in the seventh inning against Anaheim to give the A's a 4-3 lead in a 9-3 victory... Went 3 for his last 7 with six RBI as a pinch hitter... Overall, 23 of his 57 RBI either tied the game or put the A's ahead... Hit .444 (12 for 27) against Toronto and his .455 (5 for 11) performance against Colorado fueled a team leading .321 (18 for 56) average in interleague play... Had three home runs and seven RBI against Texas... Now has six home runs and 19 RBI in his career against the Rangers, both his best figures against any club.
